Special issue: Circular Economy for Emerging Waste Streams from the Renewable Energy Industry

Submission deadline: 31 December 2025

Scientific Journal: Waste Management (IF 7.1)

Decarbonising the energy sector requires massive increase of the use of renewable energy. Fossil fuel electrification should be gradually replaced by renewable energy sources in all economical sectors. Renewable energy sources include wind, solar, and hydroelectric. Battery storage systems in renewable energy industry are also used to store the intermittent energy generation of renewable energy sources. The renewable energy industry is relatively new; therefore, a sustainable approach is required to manage the end-of-life (EoL) units. The implementation of circular economy principles necessitates advanced technologies and policy making to adapt resource recovery practices of waste components.

Waste Management will run a special issue targeting on research papers, short communications and literature reviews on the area of circular economy of renewable energy industry. Subtopics of the SI can be, but not limited to, the following:

• Circular economy practices, policy frameworks and business models during the management of wastes from the renewable industry

• Resource recovery of EoL renewable energy units

• Material flow analysis of renewable energy industry

• Life cycle assessment of renewable energy industry waste

• Material reuse in construction industry and geotechnical engineering

• Advanced recycling technologies such as chemical recycling, physicochemical treatment, thermal processing, etc.

• EoL management of photovoltaic (PV) panels, wind turbines, hydroelectric power units, batteries for renewable energy storage
