Call for Nominations:SETAC Europe Return to Science Fellowship

Deadline for applications:15th of April 2010

SETAC Europe is calling for nominations for the Return to Science Fellowship in 2010.

This new fellowship, which comprises a grant of 4000 Euros and other benefits, was initiated in 2009 by Lorraine Maltby (winner of the SETAC Europe Environmental Education Award 2009) during the opening ceremony of the last SETAC Europe Meeting in Goteborg. She was spontaneously supported by donations of Petra Warmedam, and Kari Stange during the meeting. Additional sponsorship for the fellowship to be awarded in 2010 has generously been provided by Springborn-Smithers who will become the sole sponsor in 2011.

For this Fellowship, SETAC Europe seeks highly qualified and talented scientists or engineers (female or male) in the field of environmental sciences who wish to return to a career in science after a professional break of ³ one year due to either family commitments (e.g. caring for disabled/infirmed/ vulnerable family members, child birth/care, elderly care) or a period of illness.

Recipients should be based in a geographical area administered by SETAC Europe (i.e. Europe and Africa).

For Nomination please provide:

  • a full CV
  • letter(s) of recommendation or support, highlighting the track record and development potential of the applicant
  • an e-photograph
  • a publication list or other supporting documents
  • an outline of the applicants aspirations and potential for progression in her or his scientific/engineering discipline (i.e. objectives and outputs)
  • what, if any, other support, financial or otherwise, is available (eg. from existing employment where relevant) and what use has or will be been made of it
  • a strong case outlining what the fellowship grant would be used for.

The recipient will obtain a grant of € 4000, a framed certificate, and several extras including a free registration to attend the SETAC Europe Annual meeting at which the fellowship is given; one free publication of a peer reviewed article in a SETAC journal or invitation as speaker or session chair at a SETAC Europe Meeting)

(Note: the grant of €4000 is intended to enable the winner to quickly regain lost ground due to the career break and not, for example, to pay for child care)

A progress report to be submitted to SETAC Europe one year after the award has been given.

The award will be presented at the SETAC Europe 20th Annual Meeting in Seville, 23– 27 May 2010.

Applications by 15th of April 2010 to the SETAC office in Brussels (barbara.koelman@setac.org).
