DF 36: Life Cycle Assessment of secondgeneration biofuels
While most LCA studies are dealing with the environmental impacts of current biofuels, 2nd generation biofuels will be on the market soon. These promise higher efficiencies and a wider range of feedstocks that should result in lower environmental impacts.
Important questions from the LCA viewpoint are:
- Is the overall environmental performance of 2nd generation biofuels better than for current biofuels?
- Which feedstock should be used?
- Which 2nd generation technology performs best?
Challenges for the LCA of 2nd generation biofuels are the regional heterogeneity of the environmental impacts and the upscaling of process data from pilot plants to market scale.
Recent LCA approaches and results for BTL-fuels and synthetic natural gas (SNG) will be presented at this forum.
